Your first company does not need to start with an idea
It can start with friction. Ideas are abundant. Friction is evidence.
Your first company does not need to start with an idea.
It can start with friction.
Solve a problem in your own life — something annoying, repetitive, expensive, or harder than it should be.
Build the smallest solution you can.
Maybe nobody pays for it. That’s fine. You solved a real problem, learned how to ship, and now have something useful to share:
I built this because I needed it. Maybe you need it too.
But pay close attention to the problems you encounter while building.
Maybe authentication is painful. Payments keep failing. Emails don’t arrive. Analytics tell you nothing. SEO requires too much manual work.
The original product may not be the company.
The tool you needed to build it might be.
And if you genuinely can’t find a problem of your own, don’t start from a blank page. Browse TrustMRR, find small companies already making money, and study what the market has already validated.
Then ask:
- Can I make this simpler?
- Faster?
- Cheaper?
- More reliable?
- More focused on a specific customer?
Don’t blindly clone the product. Start from proven demand and find your own advantage.
Then build.
You’ll encounter friction again. Pay attention to it.
Ideas are abundant. Friction is evidence.
